Road to Calgary

When  Rotary becomes magical

Hello there - it's great you're here! I'm Rebecca, member of the Rotary Club of Wheat Ridge and AG for District 5450.

Since July 1st of last year, I'm on a walkathon. I took on the challenge of walking 2,494 miles, the equivalent distance from Munich to Calgary, in 365 days!

With every step I take I will raise funds for the Rotary Foundation, which supports life-changing projects worldwide. Please join me on this journey by donating and making an impact with every mile.

Thank you so much for your support!

Week 37: 2044 km / 1270 mi walked - 1970 km / 1224 mi still to go

2024, July 1-7

19,5 km / 12,1 mi - 26.495 steps

This first week of running almost 2,500 miles started well. I was motivated and eager to beginn this adventure. I spent this first week in the town I grew up and was happy to have had the chance to explore familiar ground, although running was not a passion of mine when I was living there. Isn’t that funny how things turn out one way or the other? I would have never thought, never dreamed of and never dared to start a project as massive as this one all these years back.

Social media seems to know that I’m doing a lot of walking lately, so I learned this: if you don’t want to spend big dollars on recovery drinks, go ahead and mix butermilk with grape juice. Doesn’t sound appealing to me, so I did some research to why these two ingredients. Here’s what I found: All kinds of differnt milk products are a great choice after a sport session. They help you fill up with protein and help stop the muscle decline due to the sport that you did. Grape juice helps deliver fast energy to the muscles. It’s rich of fructose and micronutrients.

2024, July 8 - 14

49,1 km / 30,5 mi - 63.113 steps

Second week on the trails for this good cause. Back on the trails in Munich, exploring familiar neighborhoods and strolling through new ones. That’s really one of the best side effects of this walking adventure yet: I see new parts of town I haven’t seen before. On foot, that’s how you explore.

I love walking in the rain. So this rainy days were good ones for me. I got out to the English Garden, a big park in the city center of Munich. It was pourring down quite a bit, so the streams had a lot of water and turned to a green-grey-ish color. Still, there's beauty if you are open to see it.

Did you spot the German flag in the picture? And also the little red heart and something that looks to me like a spoon you get for your take-out ice-cream?

2024, July 15 - 21

30,1 km / 18, 7 mi - 40.405 steps

Getting so many new ideas and inspirations while walking. I normally don`t like to stop while being out walking, but I do for the things that spark joy in me and to add a few more ideas to my camera roll.

One day this week I started as early as I was able to see the sunrise while walking. Beautiful encounter with nature and a city that awakens softly and boldly.

I went to the Theresienwiese where the Oktoberfest takes place in September. They already started with building. Such an adventure to see this big temporary city come to live.

Only the sky is the limit. How suitable that thougt regarding my audacious goal here. Week 3, still a lot more to go.

2024, July 22 - 28

51,1 km / 31,8 mi - 67.264 steps

Waldfriedhof and Hirschgarten it was this week. Two enormous green spaces right in the city. Thankful for all the green and nature around me without the need of leaving town. But I have to say: using public transportation did a lot to my destinations I can choose from. Now only the ticket limitations is my limit.

From great time with my family, to great times ahead with friends. Off to Helsinki, Finnland.

2024, August 12 - 18

80,6 km / 50,1 mi - 108.770 steps

Back to walking buddies and walking support. If you ever want to join me on my walks, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Being back where I grew up and also exploring some of the Black Forest region.

2024, September 2 - 8

48,9 km / 30,4 mi  - 65.350 steps

This week Sunday alongside other Rotarians I joined the youth exchange hike to Rotary peak.

While being out and about, I was wondering if I should get myself a go-pro and film where I’m walking. Anyone interested in that?

Also, our district (virtual running) club is coming soon. Stay tuned.

2024, September 23 - 29

56,8 km / 35,3 mi - 74.437 steps

As a contrast I did spend some time in the car this week to go to the mountains and watch the beautiful change of colors. The leaves were stunning!

Also, I had the chance to present my fundraiser at our District's Conference on Saturday. Alongside our district's licence plate's promotion I received much support and interest for my walk to Calgary.

2024, October 14 - 20

53 km / 32,9 mi - 72.551 steps

German Biergarten scenery in downtown Munich. I was blessed with guests from Denver this week so we did a lot of steps together. It's so much fun collecting these steps together!

2024, November 4 - 10

45,1 km / 28 mi - 61.636 steps

It's not the Rocky Mountains in the background, but the "Swabian Alb".

The Swabian Alb ranges over a length of about 200 kilometers and a width of 80 kilometers across Baden-Württemberg in the southwest of Germany. The area is bordered by the Black Forest in the south-west, by Stuttgart in the northwest, Bavaria in the east and the Danube in the south. The highest peak is 1015 m (about 3330 ft).

2024, Nov. 25 - Dec. 1

35,8 km / 22,2 mi  - 51.309 steps

Hiking in Golden this week. Favorite spot right along the creek and up into the mountains.

2024, December 16 - 22

58,9 km / 36,6 mi - 81.343 steps

Christmas Tree shopping - or watching. This is a beautiful spot to do so. Right off Sheridan where the old amusement park has been.

Also without the christmas trees and decorations this place is worth exploring. It's like traveling back in time.

2025, January 6 - 12

59,2 km / 36,8 mi - 80.709 steps

Exploring the "Waldfriedhof" today. It's a very big cemtery in the woods. It almost seems like a big park and open land rather than a cemetery. This said, it has a peaceful and mysterious atmosphere to it. Even spotted deers.

2025, Jan. 27 - Feb. 2

59,4 km / 37 mi - 82.239 steps

Walking to Calgary - step by step.

2025, February 17 - 23

32,83 km / 20,4 mi - 44.336 steps

This week I'm in Portugal, walking along the coast. What a great sunrise to start the day with, isn't it?!

2025, March 10-16

63,94 km / 39,73 mi - 88.419 steps

Walking to Calgary - step by step.

2024, July 29 - August 4

66,1 km / 41,1 mi - 88.381 steps

If you need or want more walking, consider booking a flight. You will be surprised how much walking is actually done at the airport while looking for the gate, picking up your luggage or trying to catch a train later on.

Exploring the city to its fullest. I love walking and exploring a city by foot is really the best way to do it for me. So I did see a lot and I did eat a lot. Great fish, pho, pizza and finish breakfast. The love for food comes right next to my love for walking.

I also enjoyed some thrift store shopping while away from Goodwill. Great antique thrift stores the town has. Greatly recommendable!

One day this week I walked over 34,000 steps. This is new, but I have to admit that I like it.

Second part of this week: back to Munich. Did some great sightseeing in my own home town and found also some art to enjoy.

2024, August 19 - 25

62,0 km / 38,5 mi - 83.867 steps

Back in Denver, back to my second home. I started off with walking through Wheat Ridge and came across this beautiful piece of open space: Richards-Hart Estate.

While being at the Arvada Noon Club I got great support and book recommendations regarding walking adventures.

2024, September 9 - 15

79,6 km/ 49,5 mi  - 105.531 steps

Monday is trivia night at Avanti. So to get my miles in I walked there. The Germinators are back in the house, baby!

2024, Sept. 30 - Oct. 6

84,6 km / 52,6 mi - 115.965 steps

I left Denver for a few days for Santa Monica and was able to walk on the beach! This was as beautiful and hurtful were the blisters on my feet afterwards. But worth all the pain, because there was Key Lime Pie waiting for me as a treat. Any Key Lime Pie lovers out there?

On Santa Monica Pier there's a Route 66 sign. It got me thinking: is there my next challenge calling for me? Anyone out there in favor? Anyone want to come join me?

2024, October 21 - 27

68,4 km / 42,5 mi - 93.189 steps

This is what a typical German fall day looks like - foggy, grey and the urge to stay inside is difficult to beat. But I did! And this beautiful morning scene was the gift to get up early.

2024, November 11 - 17

65,9 km / 40,9 mi - 87.794 steps

With walking so much, the right shoes are as important as the right clothes and mindset.

So this week I shopped for a new pair of walking shoes. This treat for myself felt really good.

2024, December 2 - 8

50,2 km / 31,2 mi - 70.346 steps

One of the best things this week while being out walking: I had company!

We hiked Roxborough Park - beautiful weather for spectacular views.

2024, December 23 - 29

41,4 km / 25,7 mi - 60.385 steps

Back in Munich, back to cold but beautiful sunny weather - at least that one day!

2025, January 13 - 19

40,5 km / 25,2 mi - 54.353 steps

I spotted some cute wall art on my walks this week. The unicorns sparked joy and brightened my day.

2025, February 3 - 9

32,1 km / 19,95 mi - 39.139 steps

This morning walk started with some colorful bird watching. Very artsy!

2025, February 24 - 2

93,7 km / 58,22 mi - 126.938 steps

More Portugal spam this week to look forward to!

2025, March 17-23

Walking into the new week like these flowers look forward to the fast approaching spring.

2024, August 5 - 11

87,3 km / 54,3 mi  - 117.333 steps

Different direction for the beginning of this week. I chose to walk out of the city, instead towards the city center.

I can easily get obsessed by now with planning my route for the (next) day. It’s such a great thing to explore new things, areas, neighborhoods. And sometimes there are curious finds along the way.

2024, August 26 - Sep. 1

51,6 km / 32,1 mi - 70.347 steps

This week the Broncos 7k run was on. I was so disappointed that I didn’t feel well, but I did walk and finished in 1h 22 min. My first medal this year made me proud of the progress I already made.

2024, September 16 - 22

90,4 km / 56,2 mi - 123.054 steps

Did a long walk for my birthday. The day couldn’t have started any better!

I love how many Little Free Libraries I encounter on my way. And there was also a Little Free Library with fieldguides.

On the weekend I walked the Broomfield Days and was treated to a pancake breakfast and the car show.

2024, October 7 - 13

44 km / 27,3 mi - 58.337 steps

From strolling thorugh the city to The Pretzel Run 5k in Louisville on the weekend. This week was full of walking, as every week right now is.

Got a new medal and ran the 5k. I'm off here to start a significant medal collection. Anyone out there loving medals as much as I do?

2024, Oct. 28 - Nov. 3

62,6 km / 38,9 mi  - 85.422 steps

Back to where I grew up, back to exploring familiar grounds.

The morning hours are the best time for walking -at least that's true for me. And starting the day with a sunrise and fresh air is a gift every day.

2024, November 18 - 24

96,8 km / 60,1 mi - 130.701 steps

From Munich to Helsinki to Denver. Back to one of my favorite walking spots - Sloan's Lake.

It was cold and crisp, but the right clothes make everything possible.

One beautiful thing about this walking spot: you see the mountains and the city.

2024, December 9 - 15

53,5 km / 33,2 mi - 73.648 steps

Sundays are meant for exploring downtown - not much traffic and great city views.

I have to remind myself not to take too many pictures along the way. And even if I know the route, I'm tempted to take more pictures. There's so much to see and capture. Anyone the same?

2024, Dec. 30 - 2025, Jan. 5

68,1 km / 42,3 mi - 93.522 steps

I found one of the very last Christmas Markets this week in Munich. It had one of these beautiful big christmas pyramids with lights there.

Late for Christmas, but not too late to enjoy - finally some snow!

2025, January 20 - 26

33,6 km / 20,9 mi - 47.989 steps

I treated myself to some "Kaiserschmarrn" this week. That's a traditional bavarian dessert made out of pancake pieces and topped with powered sugar. It comes with e.g. apple sauce and can include almonds and raisins, as well as being caramalized. It's a delicious but rich dessert. But for me one of the best that's out there.

2025, February 10 - 16

25,06 km / 15,57 mi - 37.445 steps

This week I walked by the famous "Theresienwiese" where the Oktoberfest takes place every year.

2025, March 3 - 9

73,9 km / 45,92 mi - 98.944 steps

Some wall art along the way in the Olympiapark.
